Welcome to Summer Community Service Camps

Give Back and Get Involved!

Sail Caribbean’s summer community service camps are exciting opportunities for teens to get involved and make a difference. Here’s a chance to contribute something of value to the world we live in. Our summer programs focus on projects that impact lives beyond your own. A dedicated helper understands how individual actions can have meaningful positive effects on others. Contributing your time, energy and abilities is a character building experience. At Sail Caribbean, we encourage respect and caring for ourselves, others and for our environment — healthy social ethics.

New Ways to Lend a Hand
Our summer home is the Caribbean, specifically the British Virgin and Leeward Islands. Sail Caribbean campers live aboard 50 ft yachts with others their age, learning to sail and exploring the islands they visit. Although all of our teen programs take the time to give something back, some focus on service and offer up to 30 service hours. At our summer community service camps, students learn new things, apply their knowledge, meet interesting people, and have fun too.

Youth Development
Our projects include youth development and environmental service. Sail Caribbean has strong relationships with local youth groups in the British Virgin Islands. This connection offers a meaningful cultural exchange opportunity for our students and island kids too. Our crew puts their new sailing skills to use demonstrating some seamanship basics on a group sail with students from the BVI’s Youth Empowerment Program (YEP). Teaching water safety and snorkeling skills to local youngsters helps them enjoy their underwater world. In turn, they enjoy giving the Sail Caribbean crew a lesson on the techniques needed to win a cricket match, or they might serve up some tasty native cuisine to satisfy everyone’s appetite.

Environmental Service
Join the cause to protect and restore beaches and marine environments. Through the UNESCO Sandwatch program we’ll examine coastal areas to help measure erosion and human impact. In partnership with the Reef Environmental Education Foundation and Coral Watch, we teach our students about coral reefs and the dangers they face, then gauge and document their health. Another project teaches fish species identification for the purpose of counting and recording their numbers. All data collected is reported to international organizations dedicated to sustaining the environment.

We present our students with fascinating lessons on sea turtle species, their movements and populations. In concert with the BVI Department of Conservation and Fisheries, we teach proper methods for catching, measuring and tagging these sea creatures. The data we collect will give local scientists the statistics they need to protect this precious species.

Make a Difference and Feel Different
Ultimately, we all share the responsibilities for the well being of the earth’s communities. Becoming an active citizen of the planet and using new found knowledge will help toward solving real world problems. Giving back means expecting nothing in return, but there’s huge reward in feeling a true sense of personal fulfillment and accomplishment from doing your part. Come join us and help set the sails to new adventures in community service.
